HANDMADE CENTURY CEDAR FRAME

Century Cedar Picture Frame 8" x 10" - #4

Well over 120 yrs old, our beautiful Century Cedar was reclaimed from the old John Hornsby Walker place on our North Woodhaven property. The Walker homestead is featured in all our frame inserts complete with 4 turkey vultures sitting on the roof. The Walker quarter was homesteaded in 1875  when the Dominion Land Act in Canada gave settlers a 1/4 section of land as long as they agreed and carried out certain stipulations that went with the land. We have a copy of the original documents for the Walker homestead and found it an interesting read.

Some of these "rules" were as follows: Adult men or women who were the sole support of their family were eligible to apply for a free homestead. To qualify the settler had to pay a $10 registration fee, break and crop 30 acres of land, live on the homestead for at least six months of the year, build a substantial house and barn, and fence some land. After three years the homesteader would make a sworn statement to say that these requirements had been met. At this time those who were not British subjects had to become Naturalized British subjects. If the homesteader passed the inspection, a patent would be issued which was taken to the Land Titles office where the title for the land would be issued. Lots more to read about this if interested at this link. Manitoba Crown Land and Homestead Records

Back To The Cedar- The over 100 year old cedar taken carefully off the old homestead, has a unique deep rich brown color and a wonderful weathered grain - some pieces complete with the nail holes & old hand wrought iron square nails which were used around here up until the early 1900's.

These cedar frames are each one of a kind and are certain to be treasured and passed down for the next generations to enjoy. Each cedar frame is hand made by Bushman Ed - from taking the cedar off the homestead to deciding which pieces to use and cutting and crafting the frames. The 8" x 10" frames come with a frame backing, glass and hanging hardware included.

With the 8" x 10" frames you have the option of purchasing a Smooth White Single Core Mat to fit our 8" x 10" frame. Purchased from a speciality Canadian mat shop, these mats are of good quality and have an opening that is 4.5" x 6.5"

Every piece of wood is unique and may have one or more interesting distinctions such as knots, burls, shotgun shell holes, nail holes, dents/dings, gouges, brands etc.. This is typical of any repurposed or reclaimed wood and is one of the things that is enjoyed by most customers and sets your purchase apart from others.

American or Canadian Pickers Of Future times will have a great time when they find one of our frames in someone's collections!
